Does a Pitcher Strike Out More at Home? What 25,000 Starts Say
"He's a different pitcher at home." It's one of the most repeated lines in baseball. We wanted to know whether a pitcher's personal home/away strikeout split is something you can actually bet on — or a story we tell after the fact. We looked at about 25,000 starts from 2020–2026 to find out.
Two questions, not one
It's easy to conflate two different claims:
- Do pitchers, as a group, strike out more at home? Yes — clearly and consistently, about a third of a strikeout more per start, every season. We covered that in Why the sharpest strikeout unders happen at home.
- Is a particular pitcher's home/away edge a stable, predictable skill? That's the question that actually matters if you want to bump one guy's projection. And here the answer is basically no.
The spread is real; the signal isn't
Look at any single season and you'll find pitchers with enormous home/away gaps — some who miss far more bats at home, others who are inexplicably better on the road. The spread across pitchers is wider than pure chance would produce, so there's a little genuine skill component in there (we estimate its true spread at roughly a third of a strikeout per start).
The problem is repeatability. When we split each pitcher's season in half and asked whether his home/away tendency in the first half predicted the second half, the correlation was about 0.07 — essentially zero. Splitting the starts a different way (odd vs. even games) gave the same answer.
You can see it in the "leaders." In a single season you'll find one ace who struck out 3.5 more per start at home and another pitcher who struck out 3.5 more on the road — same year, opposite directions, and neither repeats it. If it were a skill, the tables wouldn't reshuffle every few weeks.
Why we don't use a per-pitcher home/away multiplier
It's tempting to tag "home strikeout guys" and nudge their projections up at home. We tested exactly that, and it doesn't hold up — you'd be fitting last month's noise and calling it a read. So Strikeout Scout deliberately does not apply a pitcher-specific home/away factor.
What we do use is the part that's real and stable: the league-wide home effect, which is a dependable ~0.35 strikeouts and — importantly — only about half-priced by the market. General and repeatable beats specific and noisy.
The takeaway
"He's a different pitcher at home" is often true for a stretch and almost never bankable. The edge in strikeout props isn't in guessing which pitcher owns his ballpark — it's in the boring, repeatable structure of how the market prices home field for everyone.
